Q. What is programmed, self-guided learning?

A. This is instruction in which employees progress at their own rate. Using a customized manual, information is read in small steps. The student is tested throughout the book and receives immediate feedback.

For more than 50 years, programmed self-instruction has worked for the military, leading universities, Fortune 500 corporations and financial institutions. In Japan, programmed self-instruction is used to teach children arithmetic and is known as Kumon. It accurately measures achievement and shows trainers and managers precisely how much their students have actually learned.

Q. How does the process work?

A. Completing the manual means the student has read about the subject and answer dozens and dozens of questions that are an integral part of the text. Finally, at the end of the manual, there is a "Retention Inventory." Here, another 15 or 20 separate questions measure overall comprehension and retention of the information.

The most effective training method available today uses repetition, feedback, reinforcement and measurement to teach and create long term retention of the information.

Q. Will casino employees use it?

A. New employees can complete their manual prior to the start of work and will arrive for their first day armed with the knowledge, skills and solid work habits needed for success. For current employees, we have many proven ideas for motivating them to finish the manual and complete the 'Retention Inventory.' To date, companies as diverse as Greyhound Corp., Allied Stores, Ford Motor Company, American Express, G E Capital Corp., Merrill Lynch Reality, GAMBRO Healthcare and MasterCraft Boats have all used programmed, self-guided books with positive results.

Q. We already have training workshops/seminars. Why should we use these manuals?

A. The use of the manual is not dependent on dedicated meeting rooms, scheduled training classes, or upon expensive equipment, such as videotape machines or personal computers. Also, the completion of these manuals does not require the presence of anyone from the management staff. Importantly, the manuals will be read by employees without disrupting the flow of business within the casino.

Imagine the immense advantage a new employee can enjoy by completing the manual prior to starting his or her job. There is no need to wait for the next scheduled training class in order to acquaint the new employee with the information needed for success.

Once the front-line personnel have completed the programmed manuals, and you can verify they have a base of knowledge, additional training classes might be scheduled and devoted to advanced topics as well as group instruction, demonstrations, simulations and role play.
